Members of the RWPCS Management Team have worked together at other establishments with great records of success, commitment and dedication needed for educating students of Washington, D.C. The group believes that academic rigor should be offered and expected at every institution of learning.

Dr. Marco Clark – CEO/Head of School

Working as a tireless advocate, Dr. Marco Clark has dedicated his work to improving public school education for disenfranchised youth. He is relentless in the work of advocating for students and community engagement. In addition to his advocacy work, Dr. Clark is co-founder of PEACE through Urban Exchange, a program based out of Chicago that focuses on “Preparing, Engaging, Achieving, and Creating Excellence.” This leadership development program for high school students uses education as a tool to develop tomorrow’s leaders. As a result of his work with PEACE, Dr. Clark has built numerous partnerships with colleges and universities throughout the country. As a product of the inner city, he has maintained a strong commitment to empowering students and the community he serves. For nearly 20 years, Dr. Clark has worked as an educator in the roles of Founder, Principal, Assistant Principal, Teacher, Adjunct Professor, and mentor in various urban school systems. He has also provided educational consultation for schools in some of the most impoverished areas of Chicago, Atlanta and New York City. Marco Clark holds a Doctor of Education degree from Morgan State University and Master’s degrees from Coppin State University and Goucher College. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Clark Atlanta University.

Alisha Roberts (formerly Charles) – Chief of Operations

Alisha Roberts has most recently served as the Business Operations Manager for D.C. Charter Schools for 9 years. She deeply appreciates school choice and small school settings having elected to enroll her own child in private schools thru to college. She has facilitated Business Operations for both private and charter schools for 20 years. She brings a passion and wealth of experience in executive administration, business and office management, human resources, fiscal reconciliation and procurement, Federal and DC government and charter compliances, public relations, advertisement, recruitment, and enrollment. The extent of Roberts’ knowledge is significant and covers a broad range of administrative, project and system planning, along with providing technical skills in several critical and key areas. She has created and implemented many systems, which have been adopted and currently utilized by other entities. Alisha Roberts served as Catholic Youth Organization Director of Track and Field for 6 years, and as a Parent Coordinator with the nationally recognized DC Redwings Youth Program. Roberts is considered a mentor to several hundred student-athletes in the metropolitan area having spent 15 years as a volunteer head coach for both basketball and head coach. Charles is currently enrolled at Western Governors University and has Certification as a Human Resource Generalist from George Washington University.

Brendetta Starling – Chief of Academics (Curriculum and Instruction)

A 30-year veteran educator and administrator, Brendetta Starling has experience in teacher observation, data analysis, facilitating staff development activities, coordinating assessments and advising student government associations. She served as a Social Studies Department Head and Instructional Support Teacher in a public school system. She was most recently Vice Principal at a DC public charter school. She holds a Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education from Coppin State University, a Master’s equivalent with a Certification in Economics from Johns Hopkins University and completed coursework in administration supervision at Coppin State University. She also possesses a Maryland State Department of Education Advanced Professional Certificate.

Jerome Young – Assistant Principal – Upper School

For 11 years,  Jerome A. Young Jr. has worked to educate the youth of the District of Columbia; to provide the proper environment and support, so the every student will be capable of achieving extraordinary results and becoming a productive contributor to the advancement of our society.   While working toward his B.S in Business Management at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, NC,  he did take a couple of courses in Education and had to intern as a Teacher’s Aide at a middle school for a semester. That experience would later on contribute to his decision to enter into the field of Education.  Once receiving his degree, He applied for a job as a Social Studies teacher and Case Manager at Thomas O’Farrell Youth Center, a detention center for juvenile males in Carroll County, MD.  Working with those young men fueled his desire to really get into the field of education to provide young men and women with the necessary support and mental tools to effectively navigate through society and keep them out of the detention centers.  In 2002, he took a position as a US History teacher at an upcoming charter school in Washington, DC and has been working to educate youth of the District of Columbia since.  He has served in several positions in charter schools including Lead Teacher, Mentor Teacher, Dean of Students,  and College and Career Counselor.

Julian Goodman – Assistant Principal – Lower School

Julian Goodman has been an educator for 15 years. He brings an excited charge to RWPCS and enjoys working with dedicated staff, hard-working students, supportive parents, and a caring community. He is a native Washingtonian and started his career as a Special Education (SPED) teacher in the District. Mr. Goodman recently received his Masters of Education with a concentration in SPED/Leadership from The George Washington University. He is known throughout the Metropolitan Area as he has coached basketball for elementary, middle, and high school students. Mr. Goodman’s favorite quote is the following, “Character is who you are and reputation is what people perceive you to be.” – Morgan Wooten.

Dr. Karena Wilson-Plater – Special Education Coordinator

Dr. Karena Wilson-Plater is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. She is licensed in Maryland, DC, and Virginia. She received her Doctorate and Master’s degrees in Clinical Psychology from the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University in Washington, DC. She obtained clinical training and supervision at a children’s trauma center, a state psychiatric hospital, a community mental health center, and a correctional facility. Additionally, she completed forensic training at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, DC, Rewards Jail Intervention in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Community Correctional Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. She facilitated psychotherapy groups in the areas of substance abuse, sexual abuse & violence, and sexual offending. Dr. Wilson-Plater has experience completing psychological evaluations and diagnostic assessments for those with developmental, psychological, and intellectual disabilities. She is trained in the use of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and is passionate about working with victims of trauma. In addition to her role at Richard Wright Public Charter School, she provides comprehensive psychological evaluations and testing and individual and family therapy to children, adolescents, and families in private practice in Virginia. Dr. Wilson-Plater also teaches graduate psychology courses at Trinity Washington University. Prior to her current roles, she worked for Arlington County Government providing psychological services and intervention to the homeless population and those recently released from incarceration or long-term hospitalization. Clinical Areas of Expertise: Dr. Wilson-Plater has extensive experience providing clinical services to children, adolescents, adults, and families. She specializes in psychological evaluations and testing, behavioral problems, trauma, marital problems & family discord, depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. She utilizes various therapeutic approaches to include psychodynamic therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, family systems, play therapy, EMDR, trauma-focused therapy, and dialectical-behavior therapy.

Cortney Morgan – School Guidance Counselor

Cortney Morgan is passionate about higher education and is an advocate of lifelong learning. Ms. Morgan is a graduate of North Carolina Central University with a B.A. degree in Psychology. In May 2010, she earned her Master’s Degree in Counseling. She holds memberships with the American Counseling Association, and the American School Counselor Association. She has worked as a College Counselor for seven years throughout the District. She is a strong advocate for children and believes that every child should be afforded the opportunity to be educated beyond high school. She is happy to be working with devoted administrators, teachers, staff, parents, and community members.

Michelle Santos – Journalism and Media Arts Coordinator

Michelle Santos received her Bachelor of Fine Arts, cum laude, from the Ohio State University. She went on to earn her Master of Fine Arts, graduating with a 4.0 GPA on a Philip Morris Fellowship for Artists of Color, from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, MD. More recently, Santos graduated with a 3.97 GPA from Johns Hopkins University, earning her Master of Science in Education, while teaching in the Baltimore City Public School System. Santos has taught levels K-12 and college, public and private, mainly urban populations, with a cumulative experience of over 13 years. Besides being an educator, Santos is a professional artist exhibiting her work regionally and nationally. She is currently working on a commissioned mural for Baltimore City. She is committed to helping young people become agents of change as creative and critical thinkers, for the betterment of society as a whole, locally and globally. Santos is extremely passionate about the work she does with young people, her vision for the future, her artistic processes, embracing and infusing it with daily living, and her family.

Jamila Alarcon – ELL Coordinator

Jamila Alarcon has served as a Spanish teacher, ELL teacher, and Instructional Lead teacher for the Electives Department. As an Instructional Lead teacher she has conducted teacher observations, led department meetings and provided teaching strategies for all students. Her passion for foreign language and English Language Learners is what drives her every day. Jamila Alarcon holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies from the University of Florida.

Randi Thomas-Glover – Parent and Community Liaison

Educated in the Richmond, Virginia Public School System and a graduate of Virginia State University’s School of Psychology, Mrs. Glover is a 5 year veteran of the DC Charter School System. Prior to charter school employment, Mrs. Glover was employed at an alternative full time IEP high school in Prince George’s County, MD. Mrs. Glover has also worked with mentally disabled adults, on the psychiatric ward of a state jail and in group homes for adolescents and juveniles in the criminal justice system. With a wealth of knowledge in the area of behavior management and conflict resolution, Mrs. Glover now lends her abilities to the position of Community and Parent Liaison for Richard Wright Public Charter School for Journalism and Media Arts. In this position, it is the goal to have home, community and school work hand in hand to educate and support the students of RWPCS.

Carolyn Young-Folk – Reading Specialist

Carolyn Young-Folk is a 20-year veteran in education. She has had a stellar career working with all grades in K-12. Her education has aligned her career in promotion of literacy for youth.  She graduated Cum Laude and obtained a B.S. in Speech Pathology from the University of the District of Columbia. Also, she completed a Reading Specialist graduate Certificate program with OSSE’s Reading First grant. Additionally, she completed the graduate certification program: Charter Schools: Practices for High Performance with Harvard University in Boston, Mass. Moreover, she has over 10 years in educational leadership positions as a reading specialist/coach. She has been committed to youth literacy for over 20 years. She has worked in Public Schools and Charter Schools throughout the District of Columbia. Currently, she is a Reading Coordinator for Richard Wright Public Charter School, where she provides intervention for struggling readers, provides professional development and training on reading strategies for teachers, coordinates the reading intervention program Test Our Kids, and provides grade level texts for teachers and students.  She also develops individualized reading plans for students.  She has been instrumental in planning various reading events such as; literacy night for parents and students, poetry slams, spelling bees, and various book clubs. Also, she developed a monthly reading strategy and vocabulary words to be explained on the school’s weekly school-wide televised broadcast. She has been a valuable resource to teachers and educational professionals for her vast knowledge of literacy and its impact on schools and students they inspire every day.

Helen Compton-Harris – Outreach, Planning and Development Coordinator

Mrs. Compton-Harris is delighted to be a part of the Richard Wright Team. She is an experienced and versatile educator who is comfortable with teaching or administration. A native Washingtonian, Ms. Compton-Harris was educated in DC Public Schools. She graduated from Sweet Briar College in VA earning her BA and then joined Peace Corps serving as an English teacher in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, French West Africa. Upon her return to the states, Mrs. Compton-Harris moved to Long Beach, California where she taught Social Studies and English primarily at the middle school level. She served as a teacher coach, then later an administrator with the Long Beach Unified School District. Mrs. Compton-Harris earned her teaching credentials through California State Dominguez Hills University and her Masters in Educational Administration from the University of La Verne. In addition to her teaching credentials, she holds Tier 1 and Tier 2 Administrative Services Credential. She enjoys continuing to learn and grow.

Cheryl Mayfield-Turner – Dean of Students

Cheryl Mayfield-Turner brings extensive knowledge as a Student Behavior Specialist. Ms. Mayfield-Turner has also facilitated roles as a Parent Liaison, Programs Assistant, as well as Dean of Students, at several middle and high schools from Prince George County, MD and the District of Columbia. She works to build team relationships between the school, parents, and students. She believes establishing credibility is key and best achieved by citing her own experiences as a parent when brokering relationships within the school community. Ms. Mayfield-Turner attended Prince George’s Community College and is currently enrolled at Bowie State University’s Social Worker Program.
